Need a WordPress Developer? Maybe Not.

WordPress DeveloperIf you want a WordPress website you may not need to hire a WordPress developer.  I’m going to tell you a story that will explain why.

At the beginning of this year I had a problem.  When I first started my business in 2010, I took the quickest, easiest approach to developing a website.  I used one of Go Daddy’s templates.  My theory was I just needed a place to show my copywriting portfolio and I would be directing people to it when I met them or spoke to them on the phone.

Get found on GoogleBut as my business grew, my ambitions changed.  I wanted my website to be found on Google when someone was looking for content marketing, copywriting and marketing consulting.  That meant I needed to optimize my website for the search engines.  Translation–I needed content. In fact, I needed a blog.

So I happily signed up for a blog on Go Daddy and started to post articles.  But I noticed that my blog was on a sub-domain, not my main domain.  That raised a question.  Was my main domain getting credit for all the content I was creating?  I checked around with my techie friends and discovered I was in trouble.  To get the biggest search-engine-optimization bang for the blog, it has to be integrated into the website.

After lots of painful phone calls, I learned I couldn’t change the way my blog was set up on Go Daddy. I had to re-develop the website and blog from scratch. And by now, of course, I also understood that WordPress was a lot friendlier to the search engines than Go Daddy.phone call to web developer

That meant I needed money for a web developer.  I stalled and, sadly, lost interest in my blog.

But then one day I received an email from Pamela and Wendy, the creators of Site Setup Kit.  There they were telling me that I could create my own website in WordPress.  Now I’d been on WordPress before because I manage blogs for clients.  And even though I’d heard WordPress was intuitive, it never quite seemed that way for me.  I’d even bought ‘WordPress for Dummies’ and found it to be of little use.

But there were Pamela and Wendy telling me that they were offering a step-by-step approach to developing a WordPress website.  Not only all the techie stuff, but design tips as well.  All I had to do was invest a small fraction of what it would have cost to hire a Word Press developer, and I would be empowered to do everything myself.

So I did just that.  And this website, just launched this week, is the result.  I went step-by-step through their process and made it happen.  Yes, it was hard work but they never promised me anything else.  They sbecome your own web developerimply assured me that I could do it if I put in the work.

I have to admit there were some obstacles along the way.  Things I didn’t get or just needed a little help with.  But all I had to do was to go to the Site Setup Kit forum, ask my question and it was always answered within 24 hours–usually quicker.  They were with me every step of the way.

So if you want a WordPress website, are stretched for dollars, and are willing to put in the time, I recommend you check out Site Setup Kit . And you may never need a WordPress developer!
